Meet the Publican: Dylan Hughes, Ye Olde Rose and Crown
Next up to face our ten questions is Dylan Hughes, landlord at Ye Olde Rose and Crown in the centre of Stafford
What inspired you to run a pub?
I’ve always liked a good pub it’s a place to socialise and meet people and hear stories, a community. Beer and music have always been passions of mine so running a pub seemed a good idea and a perfect vocation
Why should people come to your pub?
We have good beer, a good range of spirits and wines and it’s a very friendly place, regular music events in a beautiful traditional pub environment. Every seat is a good seat. You can come in on your own and feel safe and included.
What will we find behind the bar to delight our tastebuds?
As a Joules pub you’ll find 4 hand cask ales kept in great condition very traditionally brewed ranging from dark to light, Slumbering Monk, Pale, Citra Blonde and a changing seasonal beer. 3 Joules keg beers (vegan) full of flavour, fresh and crisp, Green Monkey lager, Stone Ale IPA also a changing seasonal on this. Also 2 other keg lagers, a cider and Guinness. We have a great range of Gins and Rums from various makers including locals Nelsons as well as an impressive whiskey and bourbon selection. Excellent wines through white, red, rose.
We don’t do hot food but have an excellent snack offer which will compliment your drink choice.
Do you have any regular or occasional events?
Live music every weekend from full bands to acoustic acts as well as 2 DJ nights a month. A weekly Thursday quiz then a vinyl night and jam night once a month. Regular all day music fests also for local charities
What are the best & worst parts of the job?
Best part is serving wonderful people great drinks and being part of a community, seeing people happy and relaxing in your pub environment.
Worst part is banging my head in the low cellar 🙂
You have some time off – what do you do?
I’ll see my family and friends, I also play in a band so I take time off for music.
Any funny moments you can share?
Lots of great stories shared by regulars, in the day it’s a lot of laughs and banter, probably best not to share too many here!
What three words best describe your pub?
Music, beer, fun
How could CAMRA (local & national) help support you?
I think regular CAMRA trails would be great through Stafford, encouraging people to get out and support their pubs and enjoy the great Ales on offer as we have some great local breweries and pubs.
Tell us you best (or worst) pub joke
I knew a lady who worked in the bank, it always seemed chilly in there, I think it was an overdraft.
Yep….worst.
Thanks to Dylan for taking the time to answer our questions – and for the pub photos
