Our Good Beer Guide selection process follows six steps
Step 1
Beer Scores
Beer scores from the National Beer
Scoring System (NBSS) are reviewed.
The criteria for candidacy are:
• At least 3 different scorers, visits on 3
different dates
• Average score of at least 3.5 (out of 5)
• Any scores below 1.5 to be reviewed
Step 2
Member Nominations
To increase member engagement, and acknowledging that not all members use NBSS, members are invited to nominate up to 5 pubs for inclusion in the GBG
Step 3
Shortlisting
First selection meeting
CAMRA guidelines recommend that
branches ensure a good geographical
spread for its GBG entries.
Following the synthesis of NBSS scores
and member votes, we will look at the
postcodes and potentially make adjustments to the shortlist to ensure good geographical spread. This meeting to agree on a shortlist of pubs.
Step 4
Surveying
All 20 shortlisted pubs are then surveyed using CAMRA’s survey form.
Step 5
Finalising
Second selection meeting
Surveyors will report on their visits to the pubs. The final pubs for inclusion to be agreed plus 3 reserves (and their order).
NBSS scores since the first selection meeting are not taken into consideration
Step 6
Submission
Our final selection of pubs for inclusion in the following year's GBG are submitted. Due to editing constraints, our pubs for inclusion in the 2026 GBG have to be submitted by March 2025.
